Vance Joy (born James Keogh) is a recent singer-songwriter talent to come out of Melbourne, Australia. His breakout single, “Riptide” was voted number one on the 2013 Triple J Hottest 100, outranking Lorde’s “Royals” and Daft Punk’s massive hit “Get Lucky” (feat. Pharrell Williams).

He’s the home-grown talent from Melbourne’s northern suburbs that’s been amassing international acclaim with his debut album “Dream Your Life Away” (2014) and a host of break out tours across the UK, Europe and the States.

His global success came from somewhat unexpected beginnings; he has progressed from suburban obscurity of bedroom ukulele balladry to being an international headliner, making the UK top ten and going three-times platinum in Australia with “Riptide”. Prior to the onset of his musical fame, he played state-level football (Australian Rules, that is to antipodeans) in the Victorian Football League for the Coburg Football Club and graduated from Monash University with a double BA in Arts and Laws.

He released his first EP “God Loves You When You’re Dancing”, featuring his first single “From Afar” and “Riptide”, both of which were rereleased in “Dream Your Life Away”. When “Riptide” peaked at number six in the ARIA Singles Chart and landed a slot on US commercial television with its use in a GoPro ad, it seemed his talent was beginning to be truly recognised.

Vance’s songwriting builds into an infectiously catchy brand of folk-pop. “Riptides”, from its opening ukulele chords, to its soulful, wailing introduction to the infinitely replayable jangle of the chorus, is the perfect accompaniment to BBQs, beach cricket, roadtrips and campfires. It exudes the great outdoors and good, wholesome fun – a certain Australian-ness that resonates with international audiences. His stage name is taken from a work of the great Australian author Peter Carey, Bliss, which shows that Vance is one to pay homage to the home-continent.

“Dream Your Life Away” (2014) was released in the US by Atlantic Record and worldwide by Warner Music. It has peaked at number one on the Australian Albums Chart, and number two on both the Billboard Top Folk Albums and Top Alternative Albums Charts. Other singles on the album, “Mess Is Mine”, “First Time” and “Wasted Time” all found places on international charts. Given his almost immediate success, he’s one we can expect much more from in the not-too-distant future.
