Based in Los Angeles, US, Rhye, comprising of the two musicians Mike Milosh and Robin Hannibal, create sophisticated pop songs infused with R&B and soul influences.

Before working together musically, the pair were musicians in their own right. The Canadian native Mike Milosh, a classically trained cellist, moved to Berlin, Germany, to pursue a career in music, as a vocalist and producer. He began recording music for Plug Research, a label based in Los Angeles US, through which he released two albums under the name of Milosh. His first, “You Make Me Feel” came out in 2004, followed by his second release, “Meme” in 2006. Danish artist Robin Hannibal also released material through Plug Research, as part of the duo Quadron, who fused elements of soul-jazz and electronic in their self-titled debut album released in 2009.

Through their connection with the shared record label, Hannibal contacted Milosh, asking if he would like to meet to collaborate on some music. The pair met in Copenhagen, Denmark and went on to spend a week together in the studio, recording three songs for their first effort. This spurred an appreciation of each other’s musical tastes and abilities.

When both artists arrived in Los Angeles independently, they decided to reconnect and begin cooperating upon a new musical project, which they named Rhye. The duo initially released their music under a veil of mystery, uploading songs on the internet without providing any detail of whom the artists were that created it. Tracks like “Open” ad “Fall” garnered significant interest, building a following who were interested in their music.

The released their debut album in March, 2013, which received moderate chart success in Denmark and France, reaching number 12 and 154 respectively. The album was released on Polydor Records in the UK. The album gained positive critical acclaim, with Milosh’s intriguing high-pitched contralto vocals paired with the delicate soul-pop production sounding fresh and original. Similarities with their music can be heard in the work of The XX and Sade.
