Viet Cong (formed in 2012) is an expressive Canadian post-punk band comprised of two former members of the now-defunct art rock band Women, hailing from Calgary, Alberta, Canada.

Following the breakdown of their previous band Women, aided by the death of their guitarist Christopher Reimer, vocalist/bassist Matt Flegel and drummer Mike Wallace formed Viet Cong. The pair subsequently invited guitarist Scott Munro and Daniel Christiansen to complete the band’s lineup, the latter of whom had previously performed in a Black Sabbath cover band alongside Flegel and Wallace. In 2013 Viet Cong self-released their debut EP, “Cassette”, which they promoted and sold during their North American tour in support of Freak Heat Waves.

In 2014 Viet Cong played a well-received show at the year’s SXSW Festival in Austin, Texas, and signed with the Canadian independent label Flemish Eye. The label went on to release the tracks “Throw it Away” and “Continental Shelf” as singles, after which Viet Cong’s debut cassette was rereleased on vinyl by Mexican Summer in July. More high-profile shows raised the anticipation for future releases, which Viet Cong delivered in January 2015.

The band’s debut, self-titled album, issued by Jagjaguwar and Flemish Eye, aptly showcased the group’s shaded, haunting tones, epitomised by the lead single “Continental Shelf”. Extolled by many in the critical press, the record was nominated for the 2015 Polaris Music Prize, and exposed Viet Cong to a refined international audience. Following the album’s release the band embarked on their most extensive tour to date of North America and Europe, including show at Pickathon Festival, Sweden’s Way Out West Festival, and Osheaga Festival in Montreal.
