Jon Hopkins is an English music producer and musician from Surrey. Born in 1979, Hopkins is known for writing and playing the various parts of his electronic music.

Jon Hopkins grew up listening to artists such as Depeche Mode and The Pet Shop Boys as well as the early sounds of house music on his home radio. Inspired by the music around him, the musician began to learn the piano and eventually went on to study at the Royal College of Music in London. His talent for the piano had originally led John Hopkins down a more conservative path to becoming a classical pianist, but after tinkering with music production on his first ever computer, Jon Hopkins moved away from the classical and into the electronics.

After buying his first synth at the age of 15, Jon Hopkins began producing his earliest electronica. After leaving the Royal College of Music, Jon Hopkins earned the opportunity to play as part of Imogen Heap’s backing band, where he handled keyboards and samples. His time with the singer won him a record deal under which he released his first album.

“Opalescent” proved to be a somewhat significant breakthrough hit for the musician. The album was well received in the critical sphere and many of the album’s tracks were licensed to the American television show “Sex and the City”. Commercially, the album was less successful and failed to chart in the UK.

In fact, only two of Jon Hopkins’s six studio albums have managed to chart in the UK. The 2009 album “Monsters” climbed to number 13 on the UK Dance charts and the 2013 offering “Immunity” hit the number 11 spot on the UK dance charts and was also nominated for the Mercury prize.

Jon Hopkins has had the opportunity to collaborate with multiple artists throughout his career, including Coldplay, Brian Eno, and David Holmes. His talents as both a producer and musician have continually won him the opportunity to work with new artists and on new projects throughout his career. In 2010 he composed the soundtrack for the film “Monsters”; his work was highly regarded and even won him a nomination for an Ivor Novello Award.
