Atlas Genius

Atlas Genius (formed in 2009) is an Australian alternative/indie rock band, formed by three vegan brothers, hailing from Adelaide, South Australia.

Originally formed by Keith Jeffery on lead vocals and guitar, Steven Jeffery on bass, and Michael Jeffery on drums, the moniker Atlas Genius came to Michael during a dream. In the footsteps of their father, who had been in a high school band himself, the siblings started to clear out their garage to build a practice room and recording studio. Around this time English-native Darren Sell joined the group on keyboard and Atlas Genius earned a residency at a local pub playing cover songs to raise money for their studio.

Influenced by the brothers’ parents’ record collection including The Beatles and The Police, as well as Death Cab for Cutie, Beck, and Phoenix, Atlas Genius made their recording debut with the single “Trojans”. 2011 single was written by all four members of the band and received significant hype from around the blogosphere, notably Neon Gold and Triple J’s Unearthed. After the song got picked up by Sirius XM and an acoustic version premiered on MTV2’s “120 Minutes”, the band were courted by labels and subsequently signed with Warner Bros. Records.

Prior to signing with Warner Bros., Steven Jeffery announced he was leaving the group, and Atlas Genius continued as a trio of Keith, Michael, and Sell. In June 2012 the band released their debut three-track EP “Through the Glass”, which they supported with a North American tour toward the tail-end of 2012. A few months later in February 2013 Atlas Genius released their debut album “When It Was Now”, which reached No. 34 on the Billboard 200. Like the EP before it, “When It Was Now” was recorded in the band’s home studio and earned favorable reviews from across the musical press. The band subsequently released the single “If So” in February 2013 and embarked on a worldwide tour of the U.S., the UK, and Australia beginning in April 2013.
